Tayla Paget’s brother, Jake, was born with cerebral palsy. Her inspiration to become a disability support worker came from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) providers who cared for him. The impact these workers made on her family was huge, Paget said, and it made her want to do the same.

When asked why she enjoys and loves her job, Paget said it's the people and the accomplishments she achieves that makes it worthwhile. “I currently work on group-based programs which assist individuals living with a disability to develop everyday life skills. Each participant that I collaborate with is amazing. Every person is so unique and helping them to achieve goals such as passing their learners driving test is very rewarding.”

There are many benefits working in the disability support sector but for Paget, the main highlight has always been her ability to change and make a difference in someone’s life. “You’re empowering individuals to become more independent through developing life-skills,” she said, adding that she wakes up feeling excited about work every day because of the positive impact she can give to a participant.

She says working in the disability support sector has granted her the chance to make a difference in people’s lives. “When you accomplish that, there’s no better feeling in the world. I believe young people should join the disability industry because the professional bonds that are created between participants, families, and workers are special.”
